     Austin Housing Patrol is commited to providing a safe, efficient, and productive work environment. In keeping with this commitment, employees and applicants may be asked to submit to drug testing, to determine the use of illicit drugs (marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, alcohol, barbiturates, phencyclidine "PCP", etc.). Drug tests may be conducted in any of the following situations;

  • Pre-Employment - As a pre-qualification to assuming any position. Prospective employees are required to submit to a drug test prior to employment.
  • Random Testing - All employees may be subject to drug testing at any time on a random basis.
  • Reasonable Cause - Testing of this kind occurs whenever an employee displays any unusual behavior in the work place, which is similar to the symptoms of drug or alcohol use.
  • Any Incident - Any employee who is involved in a serious incident or accident while on duty, may be required to submit to a drug and alcohol test to verify physical condition.

     Subject to any limitations imposed by law, a refusal to submit to a drug or alcohol test under the conditions described above, may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

     Any driver who refuses to submit to any drug or alcohol test, will not be permitted to operate any agency or client owned vehicles. Any employee who tests positive for drugs or alcohol, will be immediately suspended and removed from employment. Whenever test results are positive, the employee will be notified by supervision, as to what drug(s) were found.
